Beginning mental health care is an important step, and many patients find it helpful to know what the first visit will involve. At Pearl Health Clinic, we aim to provide a supportive, structured experience that allows individuals and families to feel at ease while establishing a path toward improved well-being.

Preparing for the Appointment

Most new patients will begin by completing an intake process that collects contact information, insurance details, and a brief history of prior care. Individuals are also encouraged to reflect on recent experiences—such as changes in sleep, mood, or stress levels—so that these details can be shared with the provider. Patients may begin this process in advance through our New Clients page.

Arrival and Orientation

Whether attending an appointment in Ammon, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, or Rexburg, patients are asked to arrive early to allow time for check-in. Those using telehealth are encouraged to test their connection and audio/video prior to the visit. Our telehealth platform offers the same level of care as in-person visits, ensuring accessibility and convenience for individuals who prefer this format.

The Initial Consultation

The first appointment is primarily focused on understanding the patient’s current concerns and establishing a treatment direction. Providers may ask about recent challenges, goals for care, and relevant medical or family history. For those seeking counseling, the discussion often outlines a preliminary schedule and areas of focus. For patients visiting a medical provider, the consultation may include a review of treatment options and recommendations for next steps.

Family and Support Participation

Parents or caregivers may be invited to participate in part of a session when a child or adolescent is the primary patient. Adults may also choose to involve a trusted support person. These decisions are made collaboratively to ensure that the patient feels comfortable and supported during the process.

Follow-Up and Ongoing Care

Before concluding the initial visit, patients will have an opportunity to schedule follow-up appointments and ask questions regarding next steps. Many patients choose to set recurring sessions in advance to ensure continuity of care. For individuals working with medical providers, scheduled follow-ups allow for monitoring of treatment effectiveness and adjustment as needed. More information on our range of services can be found on our Counseling Services and Medical Services pages.
